What Exactly is Nur Healing?
Nur Healing is all about harnessing the profound wisdom and spiritual teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for better spiritual health, growth, and transformation. The timeless teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him) illuminate our paths, heal our hearts, and guide us towards a deeper connection with the Divine, and Nur Healing aims to harness those very teachings.
Spiritual healing itself has its roots in all world religions, and Islam is no exception. The scripture of Islam, the Qur’an, the final speech of God to mankind, professes itself as a book of healing. God Almighty says in the Qur’an:
And We send down the Qur’an, that which is a cure for the believers.
[Qur’an 17:81]
Likewise, when we delve into the deep truths found in all forms of worship and good actions in Islam, we find they are all means of healing and maintaining one’s optimum level of vitality (عَافِيَة).
Darkness and Light
Both darkness and light are two realities fundamental to understanding spiritual healing and one’s own spiritual condition. They are both creations of God. However, light is the natural, primordial disposition of all things and darkness is what materialises in its absence.
The realities of light and darkness are mentioned extensively in the Qur’an. Regarding those of light and those of darkness, God says:
Allah is the Guardian of those who believe. He brings them out from the realms of darkness into the light (NUR); and (as to) those who disbelieve, their guardians are the devils who remove them from light (NUR) towards the realms of darkness; they are the inmates of the fire, in it they shall abide forever.
[Qur’an 2:257]
Whilst comparing darkness and light, God says:
And neither darkness nor light (are alike).
[Qur’an 35:20]
They both have distinct realities and very different affects on the place/person they inhibit.
Psychological and Spiritual Illnesses
Throughout our lives, we can gather all sorts of spiritual and energetic disorders that affect our physiology, psychology and spiritual faculties. Islam is a religion that seeks to cleanse us from any contributing factors to these ailments and refine our inner and external state, granting us optimal vitality (عَافِيَة) in all aspects of our lives.
Symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma disorders, personality disorders and other various psychological, spiritual and even physical ailments are experienced by so many. These are often the result of disruptions and corruptions that exist in that dimension of the human being which is linked to the soul and the spiritual faculties.
Spiritual Well-Being
The Qur’an places great emphasis on spiritual well being. Explaining the importance of maintaining the soul, the Qur’an says:
Surely, the one who purified it (i.e. the soul) has succeeded.
And surely, the one who polluted it has failed.
[Qur’an 91:9-10]
The very meaning of success and failure has been pinpointed to the state of the soul. Its purification is by enlightening it, and its destruction is by darkening it.
Regarding light, the Qur’an mentions how the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the successful believers on the Day of Judgement will be supplicating to God for light. The Qur’an says:
On the day when Allah will not disgrace the Prophet and the believers with him; their light will be running forth ahead of them and on their right; they will say, “Our Lord! Perfect our light for us, and forgive us; indeed You are Most-Powerful over all things.”
[Qur’an 66:8]
Regarding darkening the soul, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Verily, when the servant commits a sin, a black mark appears upon his heart. If he abandons the sin, seeks forgiveness, and repents, then his heart will be polished. If he returns to the sin, the blackness will be increased until it overcomes his heart.
[Sunan Ibn Majah #4244]
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also mentioned the inner workings of the human being, and how the body functions on its physical and spiritual levels. He (peace be upon him) said:
Be aware! Indeed, in the body there is a piece of flesh; when it becomes good, the whole body becomes good, and when it is corrupted, the whole body becomes corrupt. Be aware! It is the heart.
[Sahih al-Bukhari #52]
This narration refers to the spiritual heart.
The History of Nur Healing
Nur Healing, as a concept, has existed throughout the history of Islam. This is part of that esoteric knowledge of the religion which is found in the Qur’an, hadith, and with the saints (awliya) and men of understanding (ulu ul-Albaab).
All actions ordained by Islam, from the daily ritual ablution (wudu) to the daily prayer (salah), to the obligatory almsgiving (zakat), to the etiquettes of marriage, trade, etc. - they all encourage a state of purity and light. On the other hand, all actions that are prohibited in Islam, from lying, to backbiting, to stealing, to wronging people, etc. - all bring about darkness.
The Cure of Nur Healing
The human being is multi-dimensional; we have an outer, physical being & reality and also have a spiritual, inner being & reality. The spiritual, inner reality profoundly affects and connects with the outer. Almost all physical disorders often can be traced to spiritual or energetic issues.
Nur Healing aims to teach tried-and-tested methods of authentic Islamic spiritual healing to provide enlightenment, healing, and relief by the harnessing of Divine Light (Nur) to aid everyone in their healing and self-developmental journey by assisting everyone on that spiritual, inner level so they can experience true vitality (afiyah).
