The nature of everything in this created universe is to be constantly moving. From the celestial bodies to the sub-atomic particles which make the material fabric of things, all of it is moving. This is the natural state. Even those things which may seem still, like rocks, are still moving on a molecular/cellular level.
There are great signs for mankind in this. God Almighty says:
"Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for the people of understanding.
[Qur’an 3:190]
All things in the universe change from one state to another, to another. Any living being in creation that is stagnant in its very being is considered to be lifeless. The very sign of life is movement itself - the beating of the heart, the contraction of the eye when exposed to light, the pulse when the veins of the body are felt - these are all signs of life.
The human being is a moving being and must be regulated. The old, used, waste products of the body must be discarded and constantly replenished – be it on an anatomical level, molecular level, atomic level or even deeper. This is how the human body is always moving.
On a spiritual level, things are no different. Daily, we are exposed to different forms of darkness and corruption, be it known to us or unknown. We commit sins, are exposed to spiritually-plagued environments, experience harm from people who have no light, and so much more. This is why Muslims are advised to have daily litanies, which are a protection from these things.
Additionally, we are advised by God and His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to seek forgiveness, as this is a way of removing darkness and bringing light.
However, not even being conscious of this can lead us to stagnancy; and it is in this stagnancy that darkness comes and, thus, many spiritual and even physical illnesses.
Likewise, in a world characterised by constant change and evolution, the concept of 'moving' holds significant relevance. It can pertain to physical relocations, personal development, and even spiritual growth.
Relocating one's residence is a common life event, often triggered by work opportunities, family needs, or personal growth. Islam, as a holistic way of life, guides how to approach this significant change. It emphasises adaptability, resilience, and maintaining ties with the community. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated from Makkah to Madinah due to the difficulties faced in Makkah, demonstrating the importance of seeking prosperity and well-being no matter the circumstances.
Travelling itself holds many blessings for those who undergo it. One leaves the environment of they are best used to and are put in another, often one alien to them. This change of environment inhibits tremendous growth, as it is only through the ‘new’ can be moving.
Stagnancy, whether in the physical or spiritual realm, can hinder personal growth and development. Islam recognizes the dangers of becoming complacent and encourages believers to seek improvement constantly. The Quran emphasizes the concept of self-improvement and urges individuals to reflect on their actions and intentions.
One of the key components of overcoming stagnancy in Islam is the pursuit of knowledge. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) famously stated, "Seeking knowledge is obligatory for every Muslim male and female." Knowledge itself has been described as Nur (light), and we are obligated to continuously seek that light.
God places great emphasis on spiritual progression, urging mankind to strive for a deeper connection with Him. This entails consistent acts of worship, such as prayer, fasting, and acts of charity as well as acts of spiritual purification like opposing one’s ego, cleansing the heart of its vices, etc. These practices not only nurture a sense of purpose and spiritual fulfilment but also serve as a means to break free from the chains of stagnancy.
Additionally, God’s religion for a balanced approach to life, encouraging believers to actively engage with the world while maintaining a strong spiritual foundation. This balance ensures that worldly pursuits do not overshadow spiritual growth and vice versa. Both are needed. Regarding
Moving, especially when it comes to long-distance relocations, can be a challenging experience. Islam offers a framework of resilience and patience to help believers navigate these transitions. The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the virtues of patience during times of adversity. The belief in Qadr (divine destiny) provides comfort, reminding individuals that every change, whether perceived as positive or negative, is part of a greater plan.
The dynamics between moving, stagnancy, Nur and Islam highlight the adaptability and resilience in the face of change that God wants from us. He encourages believers to embrace new opportunities, seek self-improvement, and maintain a strong spiritual foundation.
By incorporating these principles into our lives, we can navigate transitions with faith, patience, and a sense of purpose, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and balanced existence.
